SUARA NEGERI | JAKARTA — Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa will visit several Chinese steel companies suspected of tax evasion by failing to fulfill their Value Added Tax (VAT) obligations.

The field visit is scheduled to take place this week.

"It should be this week. I'll invite (journalists) for a day or two," Purbaya said when met at the Ministry of Finance office on Monday, January 26, 2026.

However, Purbaya did not reveal the specific identities of the Chinese steel companies in question.

He only mentioned that around 40 Chinese companies were detected as problematic.

"We will inspect the top two within the company shortly. They are all from China. It's not a mix-up," Purbaya said on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

Purbaya admitted his surprise that dozens of these companies were able to operate in Indonesia without fulfilling their tax obligations for such a long time.

He did not even rule out the possibility of involvement of internal elements within the Ministry of Finance.

"It should be easy for a large company to see this. It means someone from me is involved. We'll see," Purbaya concluded. (Jeane Patikawa)
